Auto Insurance Risk Selection is a process by which insurance companies decide what premium to charge and whether or not to insure a particular applicant. This means that the amount of risk is calculated based on your age, gender, driving history, the type of vehicle, and the locality where it is frequently driven. Since some of these factors are variables, the premiums also vary according to the changes in any of these factors.

Auto insurance can be mandated by the government depending on the location and the premiums determined by either the government or by the insurance company itself. Another type of auto insurance cover is the Usage Based Insurance or Pay As you Drive Insurance where the simplest form would be insurance based on the distance that is traveled. However other finer points may also be taken into consideration in such types of insurance.

Usage based insurance can be more complex when it includes the area where the car is driven, the speed at which it is driven, and even factors such as if the driver was using a cell phone while driving. There are three basic types of usage based insurance – cover based on odometer readings, cover based on the number of minutes the vehicle is being used, cover based on other data such as speed and time of the day when it was driven.

Another type of usage based insurance is progressive insurance which is a company that has developed the MyRate program to calculate the risk posed by a particular driver or vehicle. This is done by using a telemetric device that transmits data from the car to the insurance providers. It transmits speed, time of the day, and the number of miles driven by the car. Such type of insurance is available in limited places and is voluntary. MyRate is currently available in Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Maryland, New Jersey and Oregon.

Traditional ways for determining expenses of motor vehicle insurance entails gathering applicable historical information from individual interviews with, or a written application completed by, the candidate for the insurance and by taking into account the applicant’s public motor vehicle driving history that is kept by a legislative agency. Such information results in a categorization of the candidate to a wide-ranging actuarial class for which insurance rates are allocated founded upon the pragmatic skill of the insurance provider.

High risk auto insurance is presented by companies all over the nation for drivers who have had severe breaches on their driving records and/or have had their licenses revoked. There are numerous reasons for a driver to be in requirement of this sort of coverage. Tickets for drunk driving, numerous tickets for several types of breach, or multiple accidents are some of the grounds that necessitate high risk automobile insurance.
